How do I start using Joypad Legacy?

Watch the video below to see how it works:

Does Joypad work on an iPod Touch?

Yes.

Can I use Joypad without a WiFi connection?

Yes. Joypad will work over an ad-hoc network. Read the instructions for setting up an Ad Hoc network.

Will it work with a weak wifi connection?

Not really. It will lag like crazy. Use the ad hoc solution above.

Does Joypad work with MAME OS X?

Only up to release 0.112, which can be found on SourceForge. Unfortunately, newer releases of MAME OS X will not work with Joypad.

Troubleshooting (Win)

I'm getting the error "Could not use Bonjour! You must connect manually"

Joypad Connect needs Bonjour to find your iPhone that's running Joypad. The installers below are for Bonjour version 2.0.5.0, which is what ships with iTunes 10. If you already have Bonjour, please uninstall it before continuing. Customers have experienced problems after overwriting an older version of Bonjour.

Bonjour for 32 bit Windows
Bonjour for 64 bit Windows

To learn more about Bonjour, visit the Bonjour home page.

Uninstalling Bonjour

  • Windows XP: Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
  • Windows Vista: Control Panel > Programs and Features
  • Windows 7: Control Panel > Programs

My device doesn't show up in the Joypad Connect device list.

  • Did you start Joypad on your iPhone?
  • Are your Mac/PC and iPhone on the same network?
  • If both of the above requirements are met, then some form of security (e.g. a firewall or your router settings) may be preventing your device from being recognized. Try using an ad hoc network instead, this will directly connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC.

Mouse control doesn't work in Parallels.

We're working on a fix for this.

I still can't connect. Now what?

Use this method for a guaranteed connection:

  • Close Joypad Connect on your Macbook.
  • Double tap the home button of your iphone to get a list of running apps.
  • Find Joypad in the running apps list and hold your finger on it for a few seconds, a red x will appear, close it.
  • Create an ad hoc network on your PC.
  • Join the ad hoc network on your iPhone.
  • Wait until your phone is assigned an IP address (per the ad hoc instructions in step 7).
  • Open Joypad and flip to the settings screen.
  • Open Joypad Connect *do not click your phone if it appears in the device list*
  • Enter the Manual Connection Address that is displayed on the settings screen. It should be something like 169.254.xxx.xxx

Troubleshooting (Mac)

Do you have OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or higher?

Joypad Connect won't launch in OS X Lion (10.7)

My device appears in the device list, but when I select it the connection light does not illuminate...

  • Hit the home button on your iDevice (i.e. close Joypad).
  • Close Joypad Connect.
  • Restart both.

The connection light in Joypad Connect illuminates when I select my device, but nothing happens when I hit a control on Joypad.

  • Verify that you have made the correct selection in the emulator list.
  • If you are using a custom key mapping, verify that the key mapping is correct.
  • Select Nestopia from the emulator list, now verify that you can scroll a web page by hitting up and down on the d-pad.

There is a lot of lag when I hit the controls

You may have a weak wi-fi connection, try using an ad hoc network instead.
